Vacancy for Java Software Engineer

LAUGS Eco Sri Limited is a BOI venture that commenced its journey with an entrepreneurial vision to pioneer air quality management in Sri Lanka. The company facilitates the government-run mandatory Vehicle Emission Testing (VET) program through a network of 238 customer touchpoints including 95 fixed centers and 142 mobile locations covering all regions in the country.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, maintain, and support Java backend services, APIs, integrations, and enterprise application components under agreed technical designs.
  • Implement microservice components with clear responsibilities and well-defined API contracts; understand when to use synchronous API calls versus asynchronous messaging.
  • Build and maintain integrations with internal and external systems using REST APIs, and messaging; implement input validation, error handling, authentication, and logging.
  • Implement queue consumers and producers using an established platform such as Azure Service Bus or RabbitMQ; handle retries, failed messages, duplicate delivery, and dead-letter workflows according to team standards.
  • Apply Java concurrency fundamentals safely, including thread lifecycle, Runnable/Callable, ExecutorService basics, synchronised sections, concurrent collections, race-condition awareness, and deadlock prevention.
  • Write maintainable SQL queries and work with relational databases; understand joins, transactions, indexes, and basic query optimisation.
  • Use Git for source control, including commits, branches, pull requests, code reviews, and merge-conflict resolution.
  • Write unit and integration tests; support API contract testing, defect investigation, debugging, and release validation.
  • Assist with application configuration, deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting in Microsoft Azure, following team procedures.
  • Maintain technical documentation, API specifications, and support notes; communicate progress, risks, and blockers to the team.

Candidate Profile

  • Typically 1–3 years of professional Java development experience. Candidates with strong relevant internships, academic projects, or demonstrable hands-on work may also be considered.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.

Required Technical Skills

  • Good foundation in Java and object-oriented programming, including collections, generics, exception handling, streams/lambdas, and basic JVM concepts.
  • Working knowledge of Java threading and concurrency: Runnable/Callable, thread lifecycle, synchronization, ExecutorService basics, shared-state risks, race conditions, and deadlocks.
  • Understanding of microservice fundamentals, API contracts, configuration, logging, and the challenges of service-to-service communication.
  • Understanding of message queues and asynchronous processing; familiarity with producers/consumers, acknowledgements, retries, duplicate messages, and dead-letter queues.
  • Ability to write SQL queries using joins, subqueries, aggregations, and data manipulation statements; basic knowledge of relational database management systems and indexes.
  • Understanding of REST, HTTP methods, status codes, JSON, and basic API security concepts.
  • Familiarity with Git-based team workflows, Maven or Gradle, and automated testing with JUnit; knowledge of cloud concepts is beneficial.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Azure and cloud-hosted application concepts, including deployment, configuration, monitoring, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to read existing code, investigate defects methodically, and implement fixes with appropriate guidance.

Core Competencies

  • Logical thinking and a methodological approach to debugging.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to code quality, test coverage, and documentation.
  • Good communication, teamwork, and openness to feedback.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and take ownership of assigned tasks.
