We are looking for an energetic and self-motivated individual to join our team as a Technical Officer attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining a safe working environment in the lab by ensuring compliance with safety protocols & regulations.
  • Conducting safety briefings & equipment training for students before lab activities.
  • Ensuring that all safety gear, signage, & first-aid equipment are in place and functional.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of all lab equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Performing regular maintenance, inspections, & calibration of machines.
  • Maintaining an updated inventory of tools & consumables; manage equipment procurement when necessary.
  • Assisting setting up experiments for undergraduate and graduate laboratory sessions.
  • Providing technical support to students, researchers, & staff during lab sessions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • NVQ level 5 or 6, or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
  • Proficiency in operating workshop machinery (e.g., CNC machines, lathes, milling machines, welding machines, 3D printers), maintenance & troubleshooting of tools and equipment.
  • Good knowledge of materials like metals, wood, plastics, and composites.
  • Ability to create prototypes using various techniques (e.g., welding, soldering, cutting).
  • Knowledge of workshop safety protocols & equipment (e.g., PPE, fire safety) & ability to conduct risk assessments & ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Skilled in computer-aided design (CAD) software & reading & interpreting technical drawings & blueprints.
  • Mechanical assembly, repair skills & familiarity with basic electrical systems & circuits.
