Senior Development Merchandiser - US Retail Industry

Location: Hybrid (Pelawatta/ WFH)

Position Overview

The role of Development Merchandiser in the fashion industry plays a critical role in bridging the gap between design, production, and sales teams. They are responsible for ensuring that product development aligns with market trends, client requirements, and production feasibility. The role requires excellent communication skills, strong analytical abilities, and a deep understanding of fashion trends, materials, and garment construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product Development
    • Collaborate with designers to create collections that meet brand objectives and market needs.
    • Source appropriate fabrics, trims, and accessories for product development.
    • Ensure samples meet design and quality specifications within deadlines.
  • Trend Research & Analysis
    • Conduct market research to identify current and upcoming trends.
    • Analyze competitors' offerings to ensure the brand remains competitive.
    • Provide input to the design team based on market insights and consumer preferences.
  • Vendor & Supplier Coordination
    • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers and manufacturers.
    • Negotiate prices, lead times, and quality standards with vendors.
    • Monitor the production process to ensure timely delivery of samples and final products.
  • Costing & Budget Management
    • Work with the production and finance teams to establish costings for new products.
    • Ensure designs are produced within allocated budgets without compromising quality.
  • Quality Control
    • Review samples to ensure adherence to design specifications and quality standards.
    • Coordinate with the quality assurance team to address any production issues.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Act as a liaison between design, production, marketing, and sales teams.
    • Ensure that the product aligns with brand identity and sales strategies.
    • Support marketing efforts with product knowledge and storytelling.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Maintain detailed records of product development timelines, costing sheets, and quality reports.
    • Provide regular updates to senior management on development progress.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Textile Design, Merchandising, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3-6 years in a similar role in the fashion industry.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in SAP, Bamboo Rose.
    • Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems.
    • Knowledge of garment construction and material sourcing.
