Database Migration Consultant (MSSQL to PostgreSQL Migration)

We are seeking an experienced Database Migration Consultant to guide our internal development team through the migration of an enterprise-grade system — built on .NET and Java — from Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) to PostgreSQL. This is a part-time, structured advisory engagement involving focused consultative sessions each week, where you will review the team's progress, resolve technical blockers, and provide expert direction across all migration phases.
Engagement Snapshot — Part-Time Advisory Role
- Engagement Type: Part-time consultancy / advisory engagement
- Contract Duration: 6 months
- Weekly Commitment: Approx. 2 – 4 hours per week
- Session Format: Structured consultative sessions, typically 2 x 2-hour sessions per week (flexible based on project needs)
- Availability: During regular working hours (to align with the development team’s schedule)
- Work Mode: Hybrid/Onsite
Required Expertise
- Proven hands-on experience in MSSQL to PostgreSQL database migrations
- Strong command of T-SQL and PL/SQL — stored procedures, functions, views, and triggers
- Experience with .NET database integration — Npgsql, ADO.NET, and Entity Framework Core
- Experience with Java database integration — PostgreSQL JDBC, Hibernate/JPA, and Spring Boot
- Solid understanding of schema design, data type mapping, and PostgreSQL MVCC behaviour
- Familiarity with migration tools such as pgloader, SSMA, Flyway, or Liquibase
- Ability to clearly communicate complex technical decisions to a development team
- Experience with AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) or AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)
- Prior advisory or consulting engagements with development teams
- PostgreSQL performance tuning and query plan analysis experience
- Background in enterprise ERP or health information system
Scope of Engagement
- Conduct regular structured consultative sessions with the development team, reviewing progress and addressing technical blockers
- Review and validate schema conversion plans, including data type mapping and case sensitivity handling
- Guide the conversion of T-SQL stored procedures, functions, and triggers to PL/pgSQL
- Advise on driver migration for both .NET (Npgsql / Entity Framework) and Java (JDBC / Hibernate / Spring Boot)
- Support identity/sequence migration, index strategy, and transaction and locking behaviour differences
- Recommend and oversee the use of migration tooling such as pgloader, SSMA, Flyway, or Liquibase
- Define and review the parallel-run testing and regression strategy prior to cutover
- Provide guidance on PostgreSQL query performance tuning and index optimisation
