SynthVaults is a UK-based technology company developing a next-generation Laboratory Ecosystem Optimisation (LEO) platform that unifies LIMS, ELN, ERP, CRM and laboratory operations into a single intelligent ecosystem. We are looking for a talented and ambitious Associate Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to work on a genuine greenfield product, helping to design and build a modern enterprise platform from the ground up using the latest technologies and engineering best practices.
Rather than maintaining legacy software, you’ll collaborate with experienced technical leaders to build scalable, cloud-native solutions that will power research organisations, biotechnology companies, healthcare providers and advanced manufacturing laboratories worldwide.
The Role
As an Associate Software Engineer, you will contribute across both backend and frontend development, building robust APIs, intuitive user interfaces and scalable services that form the foundation of the SynthVaults platform.
You will work closely with senior engineers, product designers and architects while gaining exposure to enterprise software development, cloud technologies and modern software engineering practices.
Your Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain high-quality Java Spring Boot services
- Build modern, responsive user interfaces using React and Next.js
- Develop secure RESTful APIs and backend business logic
- Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code following industry best practices
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions
- Contribute to software architecture and technical design decisions
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively
- Collaborate within an Agile development environment
- Continuously learn new technologies and contribute innovative ideas
Technical Requirements
We value strong engineering principles, curiosity and problem-solving ability above simply knowing programming syntax.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 1 year of commercial software development experience
- Strong proficiency in Core Java
- Experience developing applications using Spring Boot
- Commercial experience with React and/or Next.js
- Good understanding of:
- Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
- SOLID principles
- Design Patterns
- RESTful API development
- Relational databases and database design
- Git version control
- Unit testing and Test-Driven Development (TDD)
- Ability to write clean, maintainable and well-documented code
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a remote environment
Desirable Skills
- Experience with Docker and containerised applications
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)
- Kubernetes
- CI/CD pipelines
- PostgreSQL
- Apache OFBiz
- Microservices architecture
- Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), ERP or enterprise software
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline from a reputable university.
