About the Role

The Junior Social Facilitator supports women-headed households through the Sri Lanka Centre for Development Facilitation’s Self-Help Group (SHG) programme in Velaveli funded by Palmera Australia. Full training will be provided to carry out the responsibilities below — prior experience is helpful but not required. The role mobilises households into SHGs, builds members’ financial and business skills, supports local leadership, and helps keep programme data accurate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community mobilisation
    • Lead community mobilisation: mobilise women-headed households into SHGs, and keep mobilising new members on an ongoing basis
    • Build good rapport and trust with the community as the main point of contact between the SLCDF and community members.
    • Support SHGs to meet and operate regularly, including savings and loan cycles.
  • Training and capacity building
    • Run training sessions for SHG members on group governance, savings and credit discipline, and basic financial literacy.
    • Spot and coach emerging local leaders to take on group leadership and solve local problems.
  • Business Development
    • Help SHGs move from savings and credit into small-enterprise activity.
    • Introduce basic livelihood and business concepts to members.
    • Connect groups to business development support from the SLCDF.
  • Data and digital literacy
    • Collect and input SHG and household monitoring data using the SLCDF's digital tools, on time.
    • Use email, Excel, mobile forms, and messaging tools (e.g. WhatsApp/Wati) for reporting.
    • Flag data issues to the SHG Programme Coordinator promptly.
  • Professional conduct and commitment
    • Attend reliably and follow through on commitments to SHG members.
    • Follow the SLCDF's safeguarding, child protection, and data confidentiality policies.
    • Represent the SLCDF professionally in the community.

Conflict of Interest — SHG Membership

The Junior Social Facilitator may not be a member of any SHG while employed by the SLCDF, to avoid any conflict of interest. Any existing membership must be paused before starting the role. They may re-join an SHG after their employment ends, subject to normal eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Flexible to work on weekends and holidays when needed.
  • Ability to travel to and work within assigned remote field areas.
  • Must own a bike (motorbike) and hold a valid license
  • GCE Advanced Level (A/L) or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong community mobilisation skills and ability to build trust with rural households.
  • Genuine commitment to community development and to supporting women-headed households.
  • Interest in training, business development, and leadership development — training will be provided.
  • Basic financial literacy.
  • Basic computer and digital literacy: email, Excel, smartphone/tablet, and messaging apps.

Contract Terms

This is a fixed-term contract of one (1) year. Continuation beyond the initial term is not automatic and depends on the SLCDF's funding availability and the individual's performance. Any renewal will be confirmed in writing before the contract expires.
