LIBRARY TEACHER - JUNIOR SCHOOL
The British School in Colombo is seeking to appoint an energetic, dedicated and self-motivated Library Teacher to join our Junior School team with immediate effect.
About the Role:
We are looking for a passionate Library Teacher who can inspire children to discover the joy of reading and develop a lifelong love of books and learning.
Working closely with students and teachers, you will create a welcoming and engaging library environment where children are encouraged to explore, read, ask questions and become confident, independent learners. You will support the development of strong reading skills and help enrich learning across the Junior School.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who loves working with children, has a genuine passion for books and reading, and wants to make a positive difference to students' learning and development.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the school library and its resources.
- Encourage students to develop a love of reading and independent learning.
- Deliver engaging library lessons and support students in developing research and information-literacy skills.
- Guide students in choosing age-appropriate books and learning resources.
- Organise reading programmes, book activities and library events.
- Maintain accurate records of library resources, loans and returns.
- Work closely with teachers to support classroom learning through effective use of library resources.
- Create a welcoming, inclusive and stimulating environment where students feel encouraged to read and learn.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic professional who:
Essential
- Holds a recognised qualification in Library Science, Education or a related field.
- Has previous experience working in a school library or educational environment.
- Has strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Has a genuine interest in children's literature, reading and education.
- Is confident working with students of different ages and abilities.
- Has basic computer literacy and is comfortable using digital library resources.
Skills & Experience
- Experience supporting diverse learners and inclusive teaching practices.
- Strong relationship-building and teamwork skills.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Ability to work positively and effectively in a dynamic school environment.
- A warm, approachable and creative attitude towards working with children.
