CHEMIST/ WATER QUALITY AND ISOTOPE DATA INTERPRETATION EXPERT (01 POSITION)

Mahaweli Consultancy Bureau (MCB) invites applications from dynamic, proactive and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Chemist / Water Quality and Isotope Data Interpretation Expert.

Scope of Work

The Consultant shall undertake, but not be limited to, the following tasks:

  • Compile, organize, and validate groundwater quality and isotope analytical results obtained during wet-season and dry-season sampling campaigns in the above river basins.
  • Develop and maintain databases/data sheets for all laboratory analytical results and related field observations.
  • Integrate isotope data with hydrochemical and water quality datasets to facilitate interpretation of groundwater processes and characteristics.
  • Conduct hydrochemical assessments and interpret groundwater quality variations across different hydrogeological settings within the study areas.
  • Prepare appropriate hydrochemical, isotopic, and statistical plots, diagrams, and graphical presentations required for interpretation of the analytical results.
  • Assess seasonal variations in groundwater quality and evaluate the influence of rainfall variability and recharge processes on groundwater chemistry.
  • Discuss the causes of observed groundwater quality variations, if any, in relation to:
    • Hydrogeological conditions;
    • Groundwater flow characteristics;
    • Recharge mechanisms;
    • Rainfall variability; and
    • Natural and anthropogenic influences.
  • Interpret groundwater quality data in conjunction with isotope hydrology findings to improve understanding of groundwater sources, recharge, and geochemical evolution.
  • Recommend practical measures to minimize groundwater pollution and improve groundwater quality within the study areas.
  • Provide technical inputs and guidance to the project team regarding the preparation of guidelines, manuals, protocols on protection and development of groundwater resources in the project area, based on hydrochemical and isotope-based interpretations.

Key Deliverables

The Consultant shall provide:

  • Validated databases/data sheets containing groundwater quality (isotope analytical results will be provided).
  • Hydrochemical and isotope interpretation plots, diagrams, and graphical outputs.
  • Report on technical assessment of seasonal and spatial groundwater quality variations.
  • Report on interpretation of relationships between groundwater quality, isotope signatures, hydrogeological conditions, and rainfall variability.
  • Recommendations for groundwater quality protection, pollution prevention, and water quality improvement.
  • A comprehensive final report summarizing methodologies, analyses, findings, interpretations, and recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience

The Consultant should possess:

  • A degree or higher qualification in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Hydrochemistry, Water Quality Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in groundwater quality assessment and hydrochemical data interpretation.
  • Experience in managing and analyzing large analytical datasets and developing water quality databases.
  • Proven experience in interpretation of isotope hydrology data and integration of isotope and hydrochemical data.
  • Familiarity with groundwater systems, hydrogeological processes, and groundwater quality issues in Sri Lanka will be an advantage.
  • Experience in preparing technical reports, data visualizations, and scientific interpretations related to groundwater studies.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in water quality or environmental chemistry-related projects.
