Manager – Legal

The position requires an Attorney-at-Law possessing a minimum of 06 years’ experience in corporate law, with an in-depth knowledge of drafting of various agreements. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. The person shall have the ability to independently act on matters of corporate law and to handle all legal matters of the Company, lead corporate legal strategy and ensure that the Management is assisted with legal expertise in any given context. A knowledge of shipping related laws would be an advantage.

The position would be located full time at the Port of Hambantota.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Monitor and ensure adherence to Commercial, Shipping and Labour laws, Port regulations and other applicable national and international legal standards.
  • Liase with regulatory bodies and represent the port in legal matters involving compliance checks and audits.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a variety of contracts including commercial agreements, port services agreements, lease agreements and vendor contracts while ensuring all contractual obligations are legally sound and compliant with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Representing the company/subsidiaries in courts and other forums in Colombo and/or outstation as well travel out of the country when required.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal policies and procedures that comply with legal standards.
  • Providing training on legal related aspects to the employees of the Company and disseminating information.
  • Keeping employees and management updated on any changes in domestic laws.
  • Assist in providing legal advice and support to other departments on issues related to port operations, contracts, employment, etc.
  • Attending to all Company secretarial work, with the external company secretary and, where required being responsible for the taking of minutes.
