Job Description

NEURODIVERGENCE SUPPORT COORDINATOR

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Academy of Design (AOD) is seeking a proactive, empathetic, and driven Neurodivergence Support Coordinator to join us on a full-time basis to bridge the gap between academic expectations and diverse learning needs.

In this role, you will work closely with Academic Faculty, Admin Staff, and Student Wellbeing services to ensure neurodiverse students feel empowered, accommodated, and set up for success. You will champion accessibility, help shape inclusive lesson delivery, and provide practical executive functioning coaching directly to students.

Note: This role focuses on advocacy, academic scaffolding, and practical support. It is distinct from our clinical Mental Health Counseling services, though you will collaborate closely with them.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proactive Student Support & Advocacy
    • Reach out to students disclosing conditions (e.g., ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia) to map out available institutional help.
    • Conduct 1-on-1 consultations to establish individual learning and access needs.
    • Provide coaching for executive functioning challenges (time management, project planning, organization).
    • Guide students on how to navigate design critiques, milestone reviews, and harsh feedback constructively.
  • Faculty Collaboration & Curriculum Development
    • Co-create and regularly update Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) in partnership with students and tutors.
    • Advise faculty on inclusive teaching styles, scaffolding for project-based work, alternative assessment formats, and flexible deadlines.
    • Participate in curriculum design discussions to champion Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
    • Refer students to the campus counsellor when clinical mental health needs intersect with academic support.
  • Campus Visibility & Culture Building
    • Actively reduce stigma by maintaining high visibility in student common areas and hosting informal drop-in hours.
    • Normalize campus conversations around neurodiversity through workshops, campaigns, and orientation events.
    • Identify institutional barriers to learning and contribute to progressive accessibility policies.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Essential Qualifications:

  • Education: A postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy (educational focus), Disability Studies, or Special Education/Learning Support.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with neurodivergent adolescents or adults.
  • Insight: Deep foundational understanding of the lived experiences and systemic barriers faced by neurodivergent individuals in academia.

Desirable (Highly Valued):

  • Familiarity with studio-based learning, design critiques, or creative arts education.
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent individuals within the Sri Lankan or South Asian context.
  • Formal training in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) frameworks.

Key Attributes:

  • Approachable, highly empathetic, and a calm presence.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to bridge gaps between students, academic hierarchies, and administrative teams.
  • A practical problem-solver who can effortlessly translate educational theories into everyday classroom solutions.

WHAT WE AIM TO ACHIEVE TOGETHER

  • Enhanced retention, confidence, and academic progression of neurodivergent students.
  • A visibly normalized, vibrant, and celebrated culture of neurodiversity on campus.
  • Higher student engagement with proactive academic support structures.
  • Seamless implementation of diverse, inclusive teaching methodologies across our cohorts.
