POSITION: CAREERS AND UNIVERSITY GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR

LOCATION: BRITISH SCHOOL IN COLOMBO

JOB TYPE: FULL-TIME, FIXED-TERM - MATERNITY COVER. START MAY 2024, FINISH AUGUST 31st, 2025.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The British School in Colombo is seeking a dedicated and experienced Careers and University Guidance Counsellor to join our dynamic team. This crucial role focuses on guiding A Level students through their educational journey, assisting in IGCSE and A Level subject selection, university and career choices, scholarship opportunities, and the visa application process. The successful candidate will work closely with the sixth form team, liaise with subject teachers across various key stages, and maintain strong connections with our global alumni network to support the university application process.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Educational Guidance: Assist students in selecting IGCSE and A Level subjects that align with their academic and career aspirations.
  • University Admissions Support: Offer comprehensive support in the university application process, advising on suitable institutions and courses, admissions test preparation, and personal statement and essay guidance.
  • Workshops and Seminars: Plan and deliver a weekly enrichment programme for Year 12, and organise workshops on university applications, scholarship opportunities, and career readiness.
  • Parental and Alumni Engagement: Regularly update parents on the application process and educate them on university admissions. Work with the Director of Alumni to leverage alumni networks for the application process.
  • University Liaison and Records Maintenance: Establish relationships with universities worldwide, arrange virtual university fairs, and maintain detailed records of student progress and counselling sessions.
  • Administrative Support: Ensure all university application-related administration and transcripts are completed within deadlines and lead the use of online platforms such as BridgeU, Common App, SLATE, and UCAS.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in Counselling, Education, or a related field; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in academic counselling, especially within a school environment. Knowledge of the British education system and international university application processes.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathy and the ability to connect with adolescents.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct one-on-one and group meetings with students to review university plans and applications.
  • Use relevant communication channels for specific group discussions.
  • Support students through the UCAS Clearing and adjustment process and scholarship applications.
  • Plan and conduct mock interviews and support subject teachers in writing specific references.
  • Stay updated with international university counselling developments through CPD opportunities with BridgeU, IACAC, and other relevant organisations.
  • Liaise with local agents to support applications as needed.
