Specialist - Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Location: Colombo

Job Profile

  • Work with the Manager - Humanitarian Emergency Affairs (HEA) in the Disaster Management Committee to make critical decisions pertaining to Disaster Management.
  • Periodical monitoring and reporting on the progress of the projects in terms of DRR & Climate Change.
  • Lead/support the development of WVL's DRR work plans and provide technical support and guidance on DRR to Area Programmes.
  • Introduction and adaptation of innovative approaches, methodologies and tools.
  • Coordinate and support joint initiatives to increase the efficiency of DRR.
  • Liaise with relevant technical staff of WVL and its partners for integration and complementarity between Development, Response, and Reduction with Integral Framework.
  • Train WVL in Vulnerability Assessments, Community Preparedness, and other Community-Based Disaster Response tools and programming.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing on DRR through trainings, meetings, webinars, and provide updates on scientific and technical developments.
  • Collaborate with Humanitarian Actors to strengthen the cooperation between WVL and the Humanitarian community.
  • Contribute to the development and rollout of appropriate DRR capacity building activities and communication products.
  • Prepare quarterly/biannual and annual plans and reports, and provide inputs to monthly management reports.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • At least 5 years' experience in working in DRR and Climate Change Adaption (CCA).
  • Degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Social Science or related field.
  • Sound knowledge in DRR and CCA.
  • Ability to come up with innovative/creative solutions in terms of DRR/CCA.
  • Fluency in English and both local languages Sinhala/Tamil (both written and spoken).

The position will be based in National Office- Colombo & requires the ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% of the time.
