Assistant Manager – Underwriting

Job Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and assess life insurance proposals in accordance with underwriting guidelines, policies, and risk standards.
  • Review medical and non-medical underwriting information and determine appropriate risk classifications.
  • Analyse medical reports, financial information, occupational details, and other relevant documentation.
  • Recommend acceptance, postponement, rejection, exclusions, loadings, or other appropriate underwriting decisions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of new business and underwriting referrals.
  • Liaise with branches, sales teams, medical professionals, reinsurers, and other relevant parties regarding underwriting requirements.
  • Monitor underwriting quality and ensure compliance with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in developing and improving underwriting guidelines, procedures, and risk assessment practices.
  • Identify emerging underwriting risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Prepare underwriting reports and management information as required.
  • Guide and support junior underwriting staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of the underwriting function.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Insurance, Finance, Business Management, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
  • Professional qualification in Insurance, such as CII/SLI, will be an added advantage.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in life insurance underwriting, preferably with experience at supervisory or executive level.
  • Sound knowledge of life insurance products, underwriting principles, medical underwriting, and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance practices and relevant regulatory requirements will be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, accuracy, and attention to detail.
