Gender and Advocacy Coordinator

Berendina Development Services (Guarantee) Limited is committed towards alleviating poverty among vulnerable and marginalized communities in Sri Lanka. Berendina Development Services (BDS) work area: Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Kangy Kegha, Mullaihoro, Nawala Eliya and Tinozoanise Districts as well as estates in Nuwara-Eliya District. BDS assists marginalized communities including vulnerable men and women, widows, elders, persons with disabilities and youth to overcome poverty. The assistance offered are grant-based in the areas of livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene, housing, health, community infrastructure development, youth skill development, school development and civic engagement as well as CSO strengthening. BDS annually supports over 25,000 families across the operating districts.

Job Profile

To contribute to the achievements of objectives and results set out in the project plans by providing assistance and guidance for the development, coordination, implementation and monitoring of the gender and advocacy action plans ensuring the gender equity.

Specific Functions

  • Prepare the gender strategy and gender integration plan to address the gender gaps and helps teams and counterparts mitigate differential impacts on men and women.
  • Provide technical assistance in consultation with the senior management across various objectives and outcomes of the projects implemented to ensure mainstreaming of gender and inclusion in project strategies and activities and ensuring the implementation in the implementation phase.
  • Ensuring gender equality and inclusion policies and regulations are applied consistently throughout the project cycle and in all other organizational activities.
  • Support for designing gender activities stipulated in project document by providing baseline informations and facilitate district level staff to execute the project activities.
  • Facilitate knowledge relating to gender equality and social inclusion by sharing relevant tools, frameworks and resources with the internal and project staff.
  • Facilitate in conducting field level trainings in addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV), Gender Integration and Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) related activities.
  • Provide technical assistance to CSOs in assessing the strength of their approach to gender mainstreaming and Women Economic Empowerment activities across the program cycle.
  • Ensure inclusion of gender-sensitive indicators in the performance measurement framework and collecting disaggregated data by sex, age, etc. and support MEAL department in compiling, analyzing and interpretation of gender and inclusion issues, and reporting the program results/outputs and objectives against the agreed indicators.
  • Support in development and implementation of gender-sensitive training and public information awareness campaigns.
  • Prepare communication materials highlighting people’s gender programming and inclusion related activities, their success and lessons learnt in collaboration with the Communication Department.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relations with a wide network of partners, including Government, development partners, parliament, media and NGOs.
  • Identify and establish collaborations with local partners to support gender-related and other advocacy initiatives.

Qualifications and Experiences

  • University Degree in Development studies, Social Sciences or related field with minimum three years of experience, with at least one year of experience with women empowerment program.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with local CSOs to implement gender and women economic development programs.
  • Ability to travel extensively to the project locations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Internet literacy a plus.
  • Should possess excellent communication skills, both verbally and written in English and Sinhala Tamil.
  • Skilled in human rights, advocacy and lobbying, dialogue and networking, report writing and gender analysis, and facilitation.
  • Age below 50 years.
