Assistant/Trainee Counsellor
1. Background
The ALOKAYA Counselling Centre operates under the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka (FPASL) as part of its commitment to provide psychosocial support services. FPASL intends to appoint an Assistant/Trainee Counsellor to support counselling activities to strengthen the service delivery of ALOKAYA Counselling Centre.
2. Objectives of the Position
- To assist in providing counselling services to clients.
- To support the implementation of psychosocial interventions.
3. Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in counselling services:
- Support the Head of Counselling in conducting individual and group counselling sessions while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain detailed client records, including session notes, progress updates, and treatment plans, ensuring confidentiality under supervision.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing services of the ALOKAYA Counselling Centre.
- Respond to hotline calls with professionalism and empathy, providing immediate psychosocial support, guidance, and referrals as needed.
Support psychosocial interventions:
- Participate in designing and implementing structured psychosocial programs (e.g., stress management workshops, awareness campaigns, peer support groups).
- Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, including collecting feedback and documenting outcomes.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure interventions are culturally sensitive and client-centered.
- Contribute to outreach activities aimed at reducing stigma and promoting mental health awareness in the community.
4. Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Counselling, or a related field.
- A postgraduate qualification in Counselling Psychology will be an added advantage.
5. Preferred Experience and Competencies
- Counselling Experience: Prior exposure to counselling, psychosocial support, or related fields (including volunteer work).
- Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and respect cultural differences.
- Crisis Management: Skills in handling clients experiencing acute distress or crises.
- Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a supportive work environment.
- Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to evolving client needs and organizational priorities.
- ICT Skills: Basic computer literacy for documentation, reporting, and communication.

The counsellor must adhere to FPASL's code of ethics, ensuring confidentiality, respect, and professionalism in all interactions with clients and colleagues.
